Hull City have confirmed the signing of Nigeria international Semi Ajayi on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion, Footynaija.com reports.
The 31-year-old centre-back, who has made 43 appearances for the Super Eagles, will join the Championship side officially on 1 July after his contract with the Baggies expires. He has signed a two-year deal with an option for a third.
Ajayi, who made 170 league appearances in six seasons at The Hawthorns, played a crucial role in West Brom’s promotion to the Premier League in 2019-20. However, injuries limited him to just 14 starts last season, with a hamstring issue ruling him out of much of the campaign, including the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. He returned on the final day of the season to bid farewell in a 5-3 win over Luton.
Speaking on the move, Ajayi said: “I’m really excited. The club’s vision was sold to me by the sporting director and head of recruitment. When I heard it, I couldn’t wait to get involved. I bring experience, leadership and Championship know-how.”
Born in South East London, Ajayi began his career at Charlton Athletic before spells at Arsenal, Cardiff, and Rotherham United, where he made over 100 appearances. He scored his first Premier League goal in a draw against Liverpool at Anfield.
He becomes the seventh Nigerian to represent Hull City and the third signing of the summer for new boss Sergej Jakirovic.
Austin Okocha, Seyi Olofinjana, Hope Akpan, Dele Adebola, Sone Aluko, and Ola Aina have all played for the Tigers.
