In a world where teenage sensations are increasingly rare and overhyped, one young Nigerian forward is cutting through the noise with nothing but goals, grit, and an eye for glory.

Meet Umar Abubakar, a 19-year-old striker from Kano, Nigeria, who just ended his loan spell at Jong KAA Gent with a thunderous record: 21 goals in 27 matches, the highest for any Nigerian teenager in Europe this season.

Dubbed the “Naija Haaland” and often fondly called “the Slenderman” for his 1.90m frame and elastic mobility, Abubakar has emerged as one of the brightest goal-poaching talents in European football.

Born in Kano and developed by the Abuja-based Footwork FC, Abubakar’s journey into the European football radar started modestly.

A quiet figure in Nigeria’s U17 squad at the 2023 U-17 AFCON, where he featured off the bench twice, few expected him to catch fire so quickly abroad. But a loan move to Belgium’s Jong KAA Gent in July 2024 proved transformative.

Playing in Belgium’s 1ste Nationale VV, Abubakar led Gent’s youth side to the league title. His blend of lethal ball-striking, smart movement in the box, and a remarkable ability to shield defenders quickly earned him plaudits across Belgium. Even more remarkable is how gracefully he moves despite his towering build — a deceptive burst of pace that leaves defenders flat-footed.

Gent had an option to sign him permanently for a modest €300,000, but surprisingly let it lapse — a decision that could come back to haunt them.

Enter Rapid Vienna. According to Voetbalnieuws, the Austrian giants have already tabled a formal bid for Abubakar, hoping to land a rising African gem ahead of a host of other interested suitors from top European leagues.

What’s next? Abubakar is expected to return to Footwork FC this summer as the tug-of-war for his signature intensifies. His next club will be buying not just a striker, but a player tailor-made for modern football — mobile, clinical, and still bubbling with untapped potential.

At just 19, Abubakar has already announced himself as a goal machine in Europe. If nurtured right, he could be Nigeria’s next great No. 9.
