Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has opened up on the emotional weight behind wearing the Nigerian jersey, explaining what true commitment to the national team means, Footynaija.com reports.

The 31-year-old, who marked his 10th year with the national team recently, made the remark during an exclusive interview where he reflected on his journey, his identity, and what drives his loyalty to Nigeria.

Troost-Ekong, born in the Netherlands and raised in England, said his choice to represent Nigeria was never forced or uncertain. Instead, he described it as one of the easiest decisions of his life. He considers it personal, rooted in family ties, and inspired by the late Stephen Keshi who gave him his first call-up.

10 YEARS REPRESENTING 🇳🇬 13.06.2015 – 06.06.2025

I will never forget the ‘Big Boss’ Stephen Keshi for believing in me to make my debut in Kaduna that day a decade ago.

“Representing the country was something I always dreamed of, and I was determined to grab that opportunity with both hands when it came,” he said.

Troost-Ekong made his debut for Nigeria on June 13, 2015, and has since become a pillar of the Super Eagles squad. He now wears the captain’s armband and leads a team filled with both homegrown and foreign-born talent.

According to him, players who want to join the Super Eagles must understand that the jersey is not just a shirt, it is a symbol that demands emotional connection and sincere dedication.

“If you’re going to wear the Nigerian jersey, you have to do it because it means something to you,” he said. “Not just because it’s an option. It has to come from your heart.”

As shared in an interview reported by Punch, the Super Eagles skipper, with 79 caps to his name, gives a rare look into the mindset of one of Nigeria’s most experienced footballers.

He said he regularly speaks with foreign-born players weighing up whether to commit to Nigeria. He never tries to convince them, instead encouraging honest reflection.

“It has to be more than just a career move. You have to feel the anthem. You have to want it.”

He also stressed that leading the team of over 200 million people is a deep honour and one he never takes for granted. Each time he walks out in green and white, he said he feels something indescribable, a pride that has never faded.

“Wearing the captain’s armband for Nigeria is an incredible honour, and it comes with great responsibility. Every time I lead the team out and hear the national anthem, it’s a moment I cherish deeply.”

Troost-Ekong’s words come at a time when the Super Eagles continue to seek improvement in their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign. He made it clear he has never once regretted his decision to represent Nigeria. Even after a decade, his connection to the country remains unshaken.

“Not even once,” he said. “I’ve always been proud of my decision, and I carry that pride every time I step onto the pitch in green and white.”
