Nigeria’s U20 men’s national team, the Flying Eagles, will return to camp in Abuja this weekend to begin final preparations for the 2025 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship, Footynaija.com reports.
Head coach Aliyu Zubairu confirmed the squad’s resumption after organisers of the tournament rescheduled the competition, originally set for last month, to now commence on July 10 in Ghana. The Flying Eagles were previously in camp before the postponement forced a temporary break in training.
The Nigerian side is drawn in Group A alongside regional rivals Ghana and Benin Republic. The much-anticipated tournament opener — a fierce ‘Jollof derby‘ between Nigeria and Ghana — is scheduled for July 10 at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. Nigeria will conclude their group stage campaign against Benin Republic on July 13.
With only two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals, the Flying Eagles will be aiming to secure maximum points from both group matches to avoid a nervy wait and any complex qualification permutations.
Group B features Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Niger Republic, with the final billed to take place on July 23 at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Ghana will be hoping home advantage can power them to glory, while Nigeria seek to reclaim regional supremacy and book a ticket to the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
