Beyond the pitch: Super Eagles star opens up about personal mental health struggles

“Everyone faces mental health challenges at some point in their lives and I am not any different.” This was the message from Super Eagles and Fulham star Alex Iwobi to the world during one of his regular off-season charity projects, Footynaija.com reports.

Last season, Iwobi enjoyed his most prolific goal-scoring campaign as a professional footballer. The Arsenal academy graduate notched nine goals and registered six assists to finish the 24/25 season as one of Fulham’s most productive players.

But beyond the glamour and glory on the football pitch, the Nigeria international is impacting the lives of the less fortunate through his Project 17 charity which provides homeless shelters and food banks for those in need.

In a recent interview with The Sun, the Fulham star opened up on the inspiration behind his charitable endeavours, revealing a desire to show the human side of himself that cannot be seen on the football pitch.

“We’re trying to raise awareness for people that are suffering with sickle cell and educate others,” the Super Eagles star said.

“We started Project 17 after Covid lockdown when my secondary school boys said I should show I’m human and there’s more to me than just football.

“Obviously, I like to do the music, I like to do fashion and I also like to also give back to charities.

“It’s not just the good, but also the bad stuff as well. I want people to know that not only that I go through the great times, but there’s also tough times in my life.

“For example, everyone suffers with mental illness or mental struggles. I do have my struggles as well.”

By speaking candidly about his personal mental health struggles, Iwobi is breaking the silence around a topic often overlooked in professional football. He reminds us that even the biggest stars face invisible struggles.
