On Wednesday night under the lights of Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, the ‘Jollof Derby’ is set for another chapter, this time in the form of the Unity Cup.
And while it may be billed as a friendly, there’s rarely anything “friendly” when these two meet.
For Ghana, this is more than just a football match. It’s about restoring pride after a stinging recent run against their old foes — four matches without a win. The last meeting, a 2-1 friendly defeat in Marrakech, rubbed salt in a wound that had already been deepened by Nigeria’s growing superiority in head-to-heads.

But Otto Addo’s men are on a bounce. A clinical 5-0 thrashing of Chad and a composed 3-0 win over Madagascar in World Cup qualifiers have propelled them to the top of Group I and infused belief into a squad blending fresh youth with seasoned campaigners.
Midfielders Abdul Samed Salis and Majeed Ashimeru return to bolster creativity, while Felix Afena-Gyan offers direct running and dynamism up front. Though they’ll be without big names like Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo, the Black Stars will look to Jordan Ayew to lead from the front with experience and guile.

For Nigeria, the picture is a little more clouded. The Super Eagles may have secured their AFCON ticket, but World Cup qualification has been anything but convincing. A promising start under new head coach Eric Chelle — a 2-0 win in Rwanda — quickly faded with a lacklustre 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe, leaving them off the pace in Group C.
This match, then, becomes more than a warm-up. It’s a moment to test systems, gel new combinations, and build rhythm before a stern run of qualifiers later in the year.
Chelle’s biggest headaches? Absences. The talismanic Victor Osimhen and Europa League hero Ademola Lookman are both unavailable, alongside the influential duo of Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey. Yet, there’s plenty to work with.

Wilfred Ndidi’s experience in midfield should anchor the side, with Kelechi Iheanacho offering link-up play behind strikers Cyriel Dessers and Toluwalase Arokodare. New invitee Felix Agu adds width and promise from the flanks, while Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze bring pace and penetration on the wings.
Tactics and key battles
Expect Ghana to dominate central possession, with Ashimeru and Samed combining well in deep-lying playmaker roles. Nigeria, meanwhile, could look more dangerous in transitions, relying on quick diagonal switches and wide overloads, especially with Chukwueze drifting in off the right.
Ayew versus Ajayi will be a key physical battle, while the duel between Ashimeru and Ndidi in midfield could dictate the tempo. In goal, Stanley Nwabali will need to continue his rise as Nigeria’s number one, facing a Ghana side that’s scoring goals for fun of late.
Prediction
The Unity Cup may be experimental in squad selection, but not in intensity. With both teams missing key stars yet bringing quality off the bench, we expect a high-tempo but balanced affair. Ghana’s recent form gives them an edge, but Nigeria’s counter-attacking ability keeps things level. A draw feels about right.
Ghana possible XI: Asare; Mensah, Salisu, Simpson, Mamudu; Ashimeru, Samed, Agyekum; Ayew, Asante, Afena-Gyan
Nigeria possible XI: Nwabali; Onyemaechi, Ajayi, Ogbu, Ismaila; Ndidi, Nduka; Chukwueze, Iheanacho; Simon, Dessers
