Nigeria’s U17 women’s team took a significant step toward securing a place at the 2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup with an emphatic 3-1 victory over South Africa in Pretoria, Footynaija.com reports.
Shakirat Moshood opened the scoring for the Flamingos, while Harmony Chidi struck twice—once in each half—to seal a crucial away win in their second-round qualifying tie.
The result also handed Nigeria early bragging rights in what was the first-ever meeting between these two nations at this level.

Nigeria, who have featured in all but one edition of the U17 Women’s World Cup, started brightly, controlling possession and putting their hosts under early pressure.
Their dominance paid off in the 20th minute when Moshood found the net at Lucas Moripe Stadium to give the visitors a deserved lead.
Chidi then doubled Nigeria’s advantage from the penalty spot five minutes before halftime, leaving the Flamingos in command at the break.
South Africa responded early in the second half, reducing the deficit in the 47th minute when Malebana converted a penalty past Nigeria goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma.
However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the 68th minute when Chidi struck again, restoring the Flamingos’ two-goal cushion.
Despite South Africa’s spirited effort, Nigeria managed the game well, denying their opponents any further breakthroughs.
The Flamingos, who advanced to this stage via a bye, are now firm favourites to progress to the third round.
The return leg is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, where Nigeria will look to complete the job and move closer to World Cup qualification.
