Nigeria and Valencia striker Umar Sadiq has returned to Spain unwell after his international commitments with the Super Eagles, Footynaija.com reports.

The 27-year-old was part of Eric Chelle’s squad for Nigeria’s March World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe but did not play a single minute. Nigeria secured a 2-0 win in Kigali but were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw at home to Zimbabwe’s Warriors.

After Tuesday’s game, Sadiq left Nigeria, alongside several other Europe-based Super Eagles players, to rejoin Valencia.

However, upon his return, he was excused from training on Thursday due to illness. According to Spanish outlet Jornada Perfecta, the Nigerian forward is suffering from a virus.

Valencia, currently preparing for their La Liga Matchday 29 clash against Mallorca, will be hoping Sadiq recovers in time to contribute. Manager Carlos Corberán’s side are looking to build on their recent form as they battle to stay clear of the relegation zone.

Despite missing training, club sources indicate that Sadiq’s illness is not serious. The striker is expected to return to full training by Saturday, giving him a chance to be involved against Mallorca.

Sadiq has become an important part of Valencia’s attack, especially in the absence of fellow forward Hugo Duro.

The Nigerian has scored four goals in recent matches and has been instrumental in the club’s push for survival.

His recent form was rewarded when he won La Liga’s Goal of the Month award for March 2025, thanks to a clever backheel equaliser in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Osasuna. He was also nominated for the league’s Player of the Month award.

Given his past injury struggles, Valencia will closely monitor his condition, but there is optimism he will be available for the upcoming fixture.
