Nigeria’s chances of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup are slipping away, Footynaija.com reports.

The Super Eagles sit fifth in their qualifying Group C with just three points from five matches, leaving them in serious danger of missing out on the tournament. With important games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe approaching, head coach Eric Chelle faces a massive task in turning things around.

Chelle, who took over in January, has been clear about the urgency of the situation. Speaking to Brila FM, he stated, “AFCON can wait; World Cup qualification is the goal.” The coach has already warned that only players performing at the highest level will be considered for selection.

According to Legit.ng, Chelle has also reached out to Nigerian football legends like Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu to help motivate the squad.

The Super Eagles travel to Rwanda on March 21 before hosting Zimbabwe later in the month. In all, Nigeria have six games left to turn things around, with each team playing the others twice at home and away.

The team’s poor performance in the qualifiers has been a talking point, as the Super Eagles have scored only four goals in five games. With Victor Osimhen in top form for Galatasaray, Chelle will be banking on his star striker to make the difference.

The upcoming matches will define the team’s future, and failure to deliver would be a low point for the Super Eagles. The Nigerian football community remains hopeful, but the pressure is on.
