With Nigeria set to face Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Eric Chelle is preparing to trim his 39-man provisional squad down to the final 23, Footynaija.com reports.

The Super Eagles need a strong response after a slow start to their qualifying campaign, and Chelle’s selections will play a key role in shaping the team’s chances.

Here is the predicted 23-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

Goalkeepers

Chelle has carefully assessed his options in goal, aiming for a balance between experience and form. Stanley Nwabali, who impressed at the AFCON, is likely to keep his place.

Adebayo Adeleye who has shown consistent performances since his move to EN Paralimniou in Cyprus, also has a strong case for inclusion. Maduka Okoye has been part of the national team setup for years and could still be included for his familiarity with the squad.

Predicted selections: Stanley Nwabali, Adebayo Adeleye, Maduka Okoye.

Defenders

In defence, Chelle is expected to prioritise consistency while maintaining squad depth. William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey are reliable centre-back options.

Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ola Aina provide quality at full-back, offering defensive stability and attacking support. Igoh Ogbu, also, a fresh face in the provisional squad, might be included as part of Chelle’s long-term vision.

Zaidu Sanusi, who has been active for Porto in recent weeks, could make the final squad, while Jordan Torunarigha remains a dependable option.

Predicted selections: William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Ola Aina, Zaidu Sanusi, Jordan Torunarigha, Igoh Ogbu.

Midfielders

Chelle’s midfield selection is expected to balance defensive strength and attacking creativity. Wilfred Ndidi’s experience makes him a key part of the squad. Alex Iwobi will likely be a central playmaker, while Frank Onyeka’s work rate provides additional stability.

Raphael Onyedika has shown steady progress at club level, and Joe Aribo’s versatility could be an asset. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru remains an exciting option pushing for more opportunities.

Predicted selections: Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Joe Aribo, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Forwards

Nigeria’s attack will revolve around key players who have maintained top form. Victor Osimhen is expected to lead the line, with Ademola Lookman providing a strong presence on the flanks.

Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon offer width and dribbling ability, Cyril Dessers was on target for Rangers in the past weekend and is a proven player, making him a dependable attacking option. Paul Onuachu’s physical presence may offer a different approach, and Ahmed Musa’s leadership qualities could secure him a place in the squad.

Predicted Selections: Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu, Cyril Dessers, Ahmed Musa.

All the 39 players in the provisional squad have their qualities and make a case for inclusion, but they face competition from more established ones.

Also, given the crucial nature of the upcoming games, Eric Chelle may opt for those who offer greater impact in the setup.
