Despite Super Eagles struggles, Moses Simon scores again for Nantes

Moses Simon got on the scoresheet for Nantes in their 3-2 loss to Le Havre, bouncing back at club level after a disappointing international break with Nigeria, Footynaija.com reports.

The winger was heavily criticised for his performance in the World Cup qualifiers, specifically in the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe where he struggled to create chances.

But just days later, he found the net in Ligue 1, showing once again that he remains a key attacking threat for his club.

At Nantes, Simon has been one of the most consistent performers this season. Before the Le Havre game, he had already registered multiple goal contributions, playing an important role in their attack in a season which he described as his best so far in the French side.

However, the 29-year-old with 72 caps has not been as convincing for his country in recent times.

In the World Cup qualifiers, particularly against Zimbabwe, Simon struggled to beat his marker and deliver effective crosses.

It is a continuation of the Super Eagles’ attacking problems, as they have now drawn four of their six qualifiers and sit fourth in Group C with seven points.

This contrast in form has been a talking point for many fans, not only about Moses Simon but also about several other Super Eagles players who shine at club level but have struggled to replicate that impact for Nigeria.

Alex Iwobi, for instance, has faced similar questions, as his creativity has not always translated into decisive contributions in crucial matches.

Another big name in this discussion is Victor Boniface. The Bayer Leverkusen striker has been in top form in Germany, scoring often for Xabi Alonso’s side. And just like Simon, Boniface also found the back of the net for his club just days after the international break, proving his ability at club level.

However, despite his strong club performances, he has yet to score a competitive goal for Nigeria. While he has shown flashes of his quality, he has struggled to convert chances in key moments for the Super Eagles.

With Nigeria fighting to improve their position in the World Cup qualifiers, this lack of goals at international level is a growing concern.

Like Simon scoring again for Nantes, these prove these players have what it takes, but they need to bring that same energy when playing for Nigeria.
