Ipswich Town have completed the signing of promising young defender Somto Boniface from Chelsea in a permanent transfer, Soccernet.football reports.

The 18-year-old left-back, who has represented England at U16, U17, and U18 levels, departs Chelsea after spending nearly a decade at the club. Boniface joined the Blues’ academy as a nine-year-old and developed through their youth ranks, eventually making his mark at U18 and U21 levels.

Regarded as a highly technical full-back with strong attacking instincts, Boniface was named Chelsea’s Academy Scholar of the Year for the 2022–23 season after a standout campaign. He played a key role for the U18s, making the second-most appearances for the side. His performances earned him a professional contract with Chelsea in March 2023.

However, opportunities in Chelsea’s development squad have been limited this season, prompting a move to Ipswich, where he is expected to have a clearer pathway to senior football. The young defender will initially link up with Ipswich’s U21 side but will aim to break into the first team in the near future.

✍️ The Club is delighted to confirm the signing of young defender Somto Boniface from Chelsea.

Somto, 18, has represented England at various age-group levels prior to joining Town, where he will continue his development.

Boniface made five appearances in Premier League 2 for Chelsea’s youth side and featured twice in the EFL Trophy for the U21s earlier this season. Known for his ability to drive forward from left-back and deliver quality crosses, he adds both defensive solidity and attacking threat to Ipswich’s ranks.

He could make his debut for the Tractor Boys as early as next week when John McGreal’s U21s take on Bristol City at Playford Road.

While the young left-back has represented England at various youth levels, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria through his family heritage. His future international allegiance remains open as he continues his development at Ipswich.
