Celtic have entered discussions with Sevilla over a potential loan move for Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho, as the Scottish champions seek to reinforce their attacking options before the transfer window closes, Soccernet.football reports.

According to Sky Sports News’ Anthony Joseph, negotiations are still at an early stage, but Celtic are keen on securing a five-month loan deal with an option to buy at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old forward is seen as a possible replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi, who recently left for French side Rennes.

Iheanacho, who joined Sevilla on a free transfer from Leicester City last summer, has endured a difficult spell in Spain.

He has yet to score in nine La Liga appearances and has struggled to integrate himself into the project at Sevilla. A move to Glasgow could provide the Nigerian with the opportunity to revive his form and gain regular game time.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is understood to be a driving force behind the club’s interest in Iheanacho.

The former Liverpool boss previously worked with the striker at Leicester, where Iheanacho had moments of brilliance, particularly in cup competitions. Rodgers believes the forward’s skill set and experience in European football could be valuable as Celtic look to strengthen their squad for domestic and continental challenges.

Earlier in January, Iheanacho reportedly rejected a move to Greek giants Panathinaikos, opting to wait for a more suitable opportunity. His agent also dismissed speculation linking him with Egyptian club Al Ahly, insisting no contact had been made.

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Celtic are expected to accelerate negotiations in the coming days as they aim to finalise a deal.

The Hoops are determined to secure attacking reinforcements, and Iheanacho’s arrival could provide Rodgers with much-needed depth as they push for success in both the Scottish Premiership and European competition.

Should the move materialise, Iheanacho would become the latest Nigerian to play for Celtic, following in the footsteps of Efe Ambrose and Rabiu Ibrahim.
