Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has opened up on his decision to join Borussia Dortmund on transfer deadline day, Soccernet.football reports.

The Super Eagles eligible midfielder cites Borussia Dortmund’s history of developing English talent and their recent run to the UEFA Champions League final as the reasons behind his move to the German club.

The 21-year-old joined the Bundesliga side on loan for the remainder of the season, after struggling for regular game time under Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. He had made just five appearances this term before sealing his move to Germany.

Chukwuemeka joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a £20 million deal in 2022 but has found first-team opportunities limited, making only 23 Premier League appearances in total.

Chukwuemeka on why he chose Dortmund

The youngster confessed he fell in love with Borussia Dortmund during their impressive adventure in the Champions League last season which ended in a narrow defeat to champions Real Madrid.

Dortmund’s track record with young English players — including Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham — also played a key role in his decision.

“Certainly the Champions League final last season,” Chukwuemeka explained. “Seeing how far the team has come. And of course, there is a long list of English players who have really shone here – Jude, Jadon, Jamie. This club has a history of developing talent.

“But overall, it is a huge club. Huge stadium. Amazing fans. A few years ago, I was on the bench when BVB played Chelsea in the Champions League. I still remember the sound in my ears – the Yellow Wall. The atmosphere was incredible.”

The England U21 international also described his arrival in Germany as a “surreal” moment, saying:

“It’s a bit surreal. I’m just taking it all in right now. It’s a massive club. They were in the Champions League final last season. I was able to watch it. Some of my friends were at the ground that day. It’s a surreal feeling sitting here now. I can’t wait to get started.”

What Dortmund fans can expect

Known for his attacking style, Chukwuemeka is eager to bring energy and creativity to Dortmund’s midfield.

“I’m a player who loves to express himself on the pitch. I play without fear. I love to dribble, create plays, pass and shoot. Every moment I’m on the pitch, I’ll give everything for this badge. Honestly, I’m grateful to be here. So yeah, that’s what the fans can expect from me. I’ll give my all in every game.”

Typically deployed as a central midfielder with a preference for attacking roles, Chukwuemeka could slot into Dortmund’s setup alongside Pascal Groß and Marcel Sabitzer. He may also compete for minutes with Julian Brandt, depending on his performances.

Will Dortmund make the deal permanent?

Dortmund have an option to buy Chukwuemeka for €40 million at the end of the season. However, given the size of the fee, it remains uncertain whether the club will activate the clause. Injuries have hampered Chukwuemek’s progress at Chelsea, and his immediate impact in Germany will be crucial in determining his future.

Dortmund, currently 11th in the Bundesliga, recently appointed Niko Kovač as head coach on an 18-month contract after parting ways with Nuri Şahin.

The club will hope Chukwuemeka can help reignite their season as they push for European qualification.
