Tottenham Hotspur skipper Heung-Min Son is set to stay in north London until June 2026 after seeing the one-year extension clause in his contract activated by the club, Soccernet.football reports.

Son joined Tottenham back in 2015 from German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and the South Korean has since racked up 169 goals and 90 assists in 431 appearances for the Lilly Whites. His current goals tally puts him in fourth place on Spurs’ all-time top scorers chart behind Harry Kane, Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Smith respectively.

Following the departure of Kane to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, Son, who was named club captain, stepped up and became Tottenham’s main man in attack. The 32-year-old went on to finish the 2023/2024 season as Spurs’ top scorer.

Son has however struggled to replicate that form this term, with the South Korea international finding himself on the bench for Tottenham’s most recent Premier League encounter, only coming on for the final half-hour of a 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Despite this, the north London side have confirmed that Son, who was set to become a free agent in the summer, will remain at the club. A club statement read: “We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to extend Heung-Min Son’s contract, which will now run until the summer of 2026.

“Having joined the Club in August, 2015, Sonny, 32, has become a global star during his time with us and a modern-day great for Tottenham Hotspur.”

With his contract situation sorted, the 32-year-old forward can now turn his full focus to re-capturing that scintillating form from last season and helping the Lilly Whites climb as high up the Premier League table as they can in the second half of the season.
