Leeds United have joined the race to sign Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho, the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner, as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the January transfer window, Soccernet.football reports.

The Championship leaders are keen to secure the services of the Sevilla striker, who has struggled for form and game time since his summer move to Spain, according to Football Insider.

Iheanacho, 28, joined Sevilla on a deal running until 2026, but his stint in La Liga has been underwhelming.

The Nigerian forward has made 11 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring three goals. However, only seven of those appearances have been as a starter, leaving him on the fringes of José Luis Mendilibar’s plans.

Reports indicate Sevilla may be willing to sanction a January exit to create room for reinforcements in their attacking department.

The former Leicester City star had previously been linked with moves to Ipswich Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers, with both clubs reportedly exploring the possibility of signing him. Now, Leeds United have added Iheanacho to their shortlist, as manager Daniel Farke seeks to bolster his attacking options.

Leeds currently sit atop the Championship with 53 points from 26 games, firmly in contention for promotion back to the Premier League.

While Joel Piroe, Patrick Bamford, and Mateo Joseph have delivered in the final third, the addition of a proven finisher like Iheanacho could further strengthen their push for promotion.

Known for his clinical finishing and ability to create opportunities for teammates, Iheanacho would bring a wealth of experience to Elland Road. His success in the Premier League with Leicester City, where he scored crucial goals during his six-year spell, makes him a desirable target.

Whether Leeds can finalise a deal in January will likely depend on Sevilla’s valuation of the player and the player’s willingness to leave La Liga just six months into his contract.
