Germany and Bayern Munich icon Oliver Kahn has entered preliminary talks to acquire struggling French club Girondins Bordeaux, signaling his ambition to return to football management in a bold and unexpected fashion, Soccernet.football reports.
Bordeaux, once a prominent force in French football, has endured a steep decline in recent years.
The club, renowned for producing talent like Zinedine Zidane, fell to Ligue 2 in 2022, only to plunge further into the Championnat National 2 (France’s fourth tier) for the 2024/25 season due to financial mismanagement. The team currently languishes 11 points adrift of promotion, facing an uphill battle for survival both on and off the pitch.
Oliver Kahn, a revered figure in football both as a player and executive, appears poised to intervene.
According to Bordeaux vice president Arnaud De Carli, initial contact was made through former Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud.
Speaking to ESPN, De Carli revealed: “I can confirm that we were approached by Eyraud on behalf of Oliver Kahn.”
While the dialogue remains in its early stages, De Carli admitted, “There is nothing further at this point. We [Bordeaux] tried to find out a bit more about the funds behind [the move]. They [Kahn] didn’t want to reveal the funds [but] at this stage that’s normal. I think they will come back.”
Kahn’s glittering career speaks volumes about his capability to navigate Bordeaux’s troubled waters.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in history, Kahn’s honours include eight Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokals, and the UEFA Champions League in 2001. His accolades extend beyond silverware, as he is the only goalkeeper to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball (2002) and a record four consecutive UEFA Best European Goalkeeper awards.
The potential acquisition also carries a tinge of irony. Kahn once thwarted Bordeaux in the 1996 UEFA Cup final, delivering heartbreak to the French club across both legs. Now, he may hold the key to their salvation—a prospect Bordeaux can hardly afford to dismiss.
Should Kahn’s rescue bid materialise, it could mark the beginning of a new chapter for both the iconic goalkeeper and a beleaguered football institution.
