Luis Enrique’s decisions push Gianluigi Donnarumma towards Serie A exit

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is reportedly discontent with his role under manager Luis Enrique, fueling speculation of a potential return to Serie A next summer, Soccernet.football reports.

The Italian shot-stopper, once considered PSG’s undisputed No. 1, has seen his position challenged recently.

According to L’Équipe (via Calciomercato), Donnarumma was left on the bench for key matches, including PSG’s Champions League, clash against Bayern Munich, where Luis Enrique favoured Matvey Safonov.

The decision drew criticism after a costly mistake by Safonov led to Kim Min-jae’s decisive goal in Bayern’s victory.

Tensions between Donnarumma and Enrique have reportedly escalated, with the 25-year-old also being benched in Ligue 1 games against Lens and Toulouse.

While Enrique initially framed the Lens omission as a rest period, subsequent exclusions appear to signal deeper issues.

Donnarumma’s discontent is compounded by stalled contract negotiations with PSG.

Talks regarding an extension have faltered, and with his current deal expiring in 2026, PSG face the risk of losing him for free if a resolution isn’t reached.

A return to Serie A now seems likely, with Napoli and Inter Milan emerging as possible destinations.

Napoli may seek a replacement for Alex Meret, whose contract expires this season, while Inter are looking for a long-term successor to Yann Sommer, who turns 36 in December.

Meanwhile, PSG’s broader struggles persist.

They face an uphill battle in the Champions League, sitting precariously in the Group with just four points from five matches. Their immediate focus shifts to Ligue 1, as they prepare to host Nantes on Saturday, November 30.
