“It was a wrong choice” – Solskjær names the one person who warned against Ronaldo’s Man United return

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær has opened up about the decision to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford in 2021, Soccernet.football reports.

When the chance came to make a move for Ronaldo, Solskjær revealed that current Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna had voiced concerns over the signing.

Solskjær’s comments come as Ipswich prepare to face Manchester United at Portman Road after the international break. It would be McKenna’s first competitive game against his old club since he left his role as United’s assistant manager.

Reflecting on Ronaldo’s return, Solskjær disclosed to Norwegian outlet NRK that McKenna had analysed the legendary forward’s last six games with Juventus after United expressed interest in re-signing him, especially amid Manchester City’s rumoured pursuit.

Despite Ronaldo’s immense legacy, McKenna advised caution, suggesting the club should focus on bolstering other areas of the squad.

According to Solskjær, McKenna questioned the defensive impact Ronaldo’s return might have, reportedly asking, “How are we going to defend ourselves?”

Despite the reservations, United moved forward with the deal, reuniting with Ronaldo after a 12-year absence.

Ronaldo went on to score 19 goals in 40 appearances but struggled to reignite United’s fortunes.

Solskjær ultimately lost his job in November 2021, just three months after Ronaldo’s return, and the Portuguese forward’s contract was terminated by Erik ten Hag shortly before the 2022 World Cup.

Reflecting on the decision, Solskjær admitted, “It was probably a wrong choice for all of us. But we felt it was the right decision then and there.”

Man United’s clash with Ipswich also marks a fresh start for the club under newly appointed manager Ruben Amorim, who takes charge following Ten Hag’s dismissal.
