Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka and Alejandro Grimaldo all made the cut, following France Football’s announcement of the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’OR, Soccernet.football reports.

All three players made significant contributions as Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen proved to be all-conquering on the domestic scene during the 2023/24 season, winning the Bundesliga and DFB POKAL without losing a single match.

Wirtz returned from a long spell on the sidelines in scintillating form, while Xhaka and Grimaldo, both summer acquisitions in 2023, instantly settled into life at the Bay Arena and made a huge impact for Alonso’s side.

Wirtz was Leverkusen’s main man as they embarked on an impressive unbeaten run that eventually ended in the Europa League final. The 21-year-old notched 18 goals and 20 assists in all competitions, going on to claim the Bundesliga Player of the Year award.

Meanwhile, Xhaka emerged as the most influential ball-playing midfielder in the Bundesliga last season, helping Die Werkself stay proactive, create chances and position themselves as one of Europe’s most formidable sides.

Playing as a left-wing back, Grimaldo notched 15 goals and 20 assists in an outstanding season for Leverkusen. His performances earned him his first call-up to the Spanish national team, where he ultimately helped La Roja secure a fourth European triumph.

No doubt, these players can be proud of themselves and the work they have done, putting Bayer Leverkusen and German football on the map. Other notable names from the Bundesliga include Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund’s Matt Hummels.
