UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) has imposed fines on Roma, Aston Villa, and Olympique Marseille for breaches of financial regulations, Soccernet.football reports.

The penalties were primarily due to the late submission of financial information by the clubs. Roma received the heaviest fine, a substantial €2 million, while Aston Villa and Marseille were fined €60,000 and €20,000, respectively.

The CFCB announced the sanctions following their assessment of clubs involved in the 2023/24 season.

UEFA explained, “The First Chamber of the CFCB completed the assessment of the clubs that participated in the 2023/24 season or were in liquidation during that period.”

The financial oversight was part of the new ‘cost bracket’ rule, which is being implemented progressively over three years, starting with a squad cost ratio limit of 90% for the 2023 season.

“All clubs reported a squad cost ratio within the 90% limit applicable for the 2023/24 season. However, two clubs, Aston Villa and Olympique de Marseille, were fined by the First Chamber of the CFCB €60,000 and €20,000 respectively for late submission of their financial information,” UEFA noted.

Meanwhile, Roma’s fine of €2 million was issued for slightly exceeding the financial targets set for the 2023 financial year.

Additionally, Turkish club Başakşehir was sanctioned for failing to meet its financial targets for the 2023/24 season. The club faces exclusion from future UEFA competitions unless they meet the necessary financial criteria in the 2024/25 season, along with other restrictions, including a fine of €100,000 and player registration limitations.

UEFA continues to closely monitor several clubs to ensure compliance with financial regulations as the new rules take effect.
