Spain’s Lamine Yamal has broken two of Pele’s records in the Euro 2024 semi-final against France, Soccernet.football reports.
Spain secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over France on Tuesday night, earning a place in the final against either England or the Netherlands.
Yamal, at 16 years and 362 days old, made history as the youngest player to appear in a semi-final at a major international tournament, surpassing Pele’s record set in 1958.
The match started with France’s Kolo Muani scoring in the second minute. However, Yamal quickly equalized with a stunning goal, writing his name in the record books as the youngest goal scorer in the history of the European Championships.
Yamal didn’t stop there. Four minutes after his goal, the Barcelona youngster provided an assist for Dani Olmo’s goal, which gave Spain the lead.
This assist marked his third of the tournament, making him the first teenager to record three or more assists in a single European Championship or World Cup since 1966. That smashed another Pele record into dust.
Earlier in the tournament, Yamal had already made headlines by becoming the youngest player to feature in the Euros during Spain’s group opener against Croatia.
He also became the youngest player and goalscorer for Spain when he scored on his senior debut against Georgia in September.
Despite France’s efforts, including the talents of Kylian Mbappe, they couldn’t find a way back into the match. Spain held on to their lead, securing a 2-1 win and advancing to the Euro 2024 final.
