Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez has emerged as a top contender for the Ballon d’Or after a standout performance in the Copa América, Soccernet.football reports.

The prestigious award ceremony is set for October 28.

Following a summer of thrilling football in the European Championship and Copa América, the new season is about to start, bringing with it the anticipation of the Ballon d’Or, one of the highest individual honours in football.

The recent international tournaments have clarified the leading candidates for the Ballon d’Or, with some players benefiting more than others.

According to France Football, the organization behind the award, these tournaments have influenced the rankings.

Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham remains a strong candidate, thanks to his performances for both his club and the English national team. Similarly, Rodri has gained momentum after playing a crucial role for the Spanish champions.

Argentina’s Copa 2024 hero Lautaro Martinez has also emerged as a top contender for the award.

Martinez scored the decisive goal for Argentina in their 1-0 victory over Colombia at the Hard Rock Stadium, securing the Copa América title. He was also the top scorer of the tournament with five goals.

Martinez’s successful season with Inter Milan, where he was the captain and top scorer with 24 goals, further strengthens his case.

His performances, including goals against Canada, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia, have caught the voters’ attention. Additionally, his role in winning the Italian Super Cup and Serie A has been notable.

Despite Martinez’s rise, L’Equipe suggests Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. remains a strong candidate for the Ballon d’Or.

Although Brazil exited the Copa América in the quarter-finals, Vinicius’s contributions to Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League victories keep him in the running.

The 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on October 28. A jury of international journalists will select the winner, following Lionel Messi’s previous triumph.

The nominees will be announced on September 4. Other awards to be presented include the Women’s Ballon d’Or, Kopa Trophy (best young player), Yachine Trophy (best goalkeeper), Gerd Müller Trophy (best goalscorer), and Socrates Award (social commitment), along with honours for the best coaches and clubs in both men’s and women’s football.
