Former Liverpool and Barcelona goalkeeper Pepe Reina has joined Serie A newcomers Como 1907 on a one-year deal, Soccernet.football reports.

The club announced his signing today, Wednesday, 18 July 2024.

Reina has been with Como in Marbella for a few days and has now officially joined the Larian club. He will be playing under head coach Cesc Fabregas, who was his former international teammate.

Reina has played for top clubs like Barcelona, Villarreal, Liverpool, Napoli, Bayern Munich, Milan, Aston Villa, and Lazio.

He has been named the best goalkeeper in the Premier League three times and has 36 caps for the Spanish national team. Reina was part of Spain’s squads that won the 2010 World Cup and the European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

Head coach Cesc Fabregas shared his thoughts on Reina joining the team: “We are delighted to welcome Pepe to the club. He is a goalkeeper with a wealth of international experience and a very competitive mentality. For these reasons, I am sure that his contribution will help the team grow and improve.”

Reina also shared his excitement: “I am arriving in a beautiful project, a family that continues to grow and tries to raise the bar every year. I am returning to a championship that I know well and that I know is very competitive, for my part I want to give my contribution to the development of this Club.”

Pepe Reina, son of famed goalkeeper Miguel Reina, started his career with Barcelona’s youth team and made his La Liga debut in the 2000–01 season.

He then moved to Villarreal in 2002, winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup twice. At Liverpool, he debuted in the 2005 UEFA Super Cup, which Liverpool won. Reina quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper, winning the FA Cup and the FA Community Shield. He also reached the 2007 Champions League final with Liverpool, where they lost to AC Milan.

After eight seasons as Liverpool’s first-choice keeper, Reina spent the 2013–14 season on loan at Napoli, reuniting with coach Rafael Benítez.

He helped Napoli win the Coppa Italia in 2014. Reina then joined Bayern Munich as the second-choice keeper behind Manuel Neuer. In 2015, he returned to Napoli before moving to Milan in 2018. In January 2020, he was loaned to Aston Villa and later returned to Serie A with Lazio in August 2020.
