Germany’s World Cup-winning forward, Thomas Muller, has announced his retirement from international football, Soccernet.football reports.

Muller’s decision comes after the conclusion of Euro 2024, held in his home country.

The 34-year-old revealed his decision the day after Spain won the European Championship in Berlin, defeating England 2-1 in the final.

Muller ends a distinguished 14-year international career during which he made 86 goal contributions in 131 appearances for Germany.

Muller was part of Germany’s Euro 2024 squad but played only 56 minutes across two matches. He provided an assist in the opening game against Scotland.

His final appearance for Germany was as a substitute in the quarter-final loss to Spain, where Germany was eliminated after extra time.

Muller played a key role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup victory, scoring five goals in the tournament. He also won the Golden Boot at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Although retiring from international football, Muller will continue to play for Bayern Munich, with one year remaining on his contract.

Germany face the challenge of replacing such a pivotal player but hopes that emerging talents like Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz can step up.
