Rwanda defender Ange Mutsinzi has sent a strong message to Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali, Footynaija.com reports.
Despite Nigeria’s rich football history, Mutsinzi insists that Rwanda are not intimidated by past achievements, maintaining that their focus is firmly on World Cup qualification.
“We are certainly not concerned about history books and what has happened before. Qualification for the FIFA World Cup is our priority,” Mutsinzi said, as per The New Times.
His statement comes as Rwanda continue their push for a maiden World Cup appearance.
The Amavubi have grown into a formidable force in Group C, currently sitting second with seven points from four matches.
Mutsinzi is confident that Rwanda can take a major step towards qualification with a victory over Nigeria.
“We need to defend well if we want to get points. Every game starts with better defending, so we must be ready and give 100 percent because the three points can move us to nine points, which would be very good for us,” he added.
Rwanda’s qualifying campaign has been a mix of setbacks and resilience. A narrow 1-0 defeat to Benin last June was a blow, but the team bounced back with a crucial 1-0 away victory over Lesotho. Now, with a chance to test themselves against one of Africa’s footballing giants, the Amavubi are determined to seize the moment.
Meanwhile, Nigeria find themselves in a precarious position. With just three points from their opening four games, the Super Eagles are languishing in fifth place, making this fixture a must-win. The pressure is mounting on newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle, who must rally his team for a strong response in Kigali.
