Eric Chelle has unveiled his final 23-man Super Eagles squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, Footynaija.com reports.

With several big names retained and a few surprise omissions, the list reflects the coach’s tactical direction as Nigeria seeks crucial points on the road to qualification.

Stanley Nwabali remains Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, following his impressive displays at the AFCON. He is joined by Amas Obasogie and NPFL standout Kayode Bankole, who gets another chance to prove himself on the international stage. The omission of Maduka Okoye, who is a subject of an ongoing match-fixing investigation, is a notable decision.

Defenders

Captain William Troost-Ekong leads the backline, with Bright Osayi-Samuel, Bruno Onyemaechi, Calvin Bassey, and Ola Aina providing stability. Igoh Ogbu also makes the final cut, offering defensive depth.

The absence of Jordan Torunarigha and Zaidu Sanusi stands out, suggesting Chelle has opted for a mix of versatility and fitness in his defensive setup.

Midfielders

Wilfred Ndidi anchors the midfield, alongside Raphael Onyedika, Alhassan Yusuf, Alex Iwobi, and Joe Aribo. These selections highlight Chelle’s preference for experience and control in the centre of the pitch.

However, the inclusion of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) talent Papa Daniel Mustapha is a bold choice, showing a commitment to domestic league representation.

Forwards

As expected, the attack is spearheaded by Victor Osimhen, with Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Victor Boniface providing additional firepower.

Moses Simon, Sadiq Umar, and Nathan Tella also retain their spots, while Tolu Arokodare makes the squad. The exclusion of Paul Onuachu and Kelechi Iheanacho is noteworthy, with Chelle seemingly favouring a more dynamic frontline.

Chelle’s final squad suggests a tactical approach focused on balance and mobility. The exclusion of some established names sure raises questions, but his choices reflect a mix of form, fitness, and adaptability.

The Super Eagles face Rwanda on March 21 in Kigali before hosting Zimbabwe on March 25 in Uyo, with expectations high for strong performances in both fixtures.
