Former Nigeria head coach José Peseiro is set to take charge of Egyptian giants Zamalek, marking his return to the country nearly a decade after managing Al Ahly, Soccernet.football reports.

The 64-year-old Portuguese has reportedly agreed to replace Swiss coach Christian Gross, who bid farewell to the squad during training earlier today.

Peseiro is scheduled to arrive in Cairo at 8pm local time, where he will sign his contract and meet with club officials.

Peseiro has been out of work since leaving the Super Eagles in March 2024, following an impressive run to the Africa Cup of Nations final, where Nigeria lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast. Despite financial constraints within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), he guided the team to a strong tournament showing, earning widespread praise.

After his departure, Peseiro described coaching Nigeria as “a privilege,” expressing gratitude to the NFF and his players.

The former Porto and Venezuela boss was even honoured with the Order of the Niger and promised land and housing in recognition of his achievements.

This move to Zamalek will be his second stint in Egyptian football, having previously led Al Ahly during the 2015/16 season. Now, he faces a fresh challenge, aiming to steer Zamalek back to domestic and continental success.
