San Diego Wave FC have officially confirmed the signing of Nigerian forward Chiamaka Okwuchukwu from Rivers Angels FC, Soccernet.football reports.

The 19-year-old joins the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side on a one-year contract, bolstering their attacking options for the upcoming season.

Okwuchukwu’s signing comes on the back of her standout performances at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. The young striker was instrumental in Nigeria’s campaign, featuring in all four matches, netting two goals, and providing one assist.

This followed her earlier success at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, where she helped the Falconets reach the quarterfinals.

Camille Ashton, San Diego Wave FC’s Sporting Director and General Manager, expressed her enthusiasm about Okwuchukwu’s arrival.

“Chiamaka is a talented young forward who brings dynamism and creativity to our attack. Her skill set complements our existing players, and we’re excited to see her develop within our system,” Ashton said in a statement.

Okwuchukwu’s move is another significant milestone for Nigerian football, as she joins the growing list of Super Falcons stars making their mark in the NWSL, including Asisat Oshoala, Michelle Alozie, and Uchenna Kanu. The presence of her compatriots is expected to ease her transition to life in the United States, both on and off the pitch.

Before officially joining the team, Okwuchukwu will undergo a medical examination, secure her International Transfer Certificate (ITC), and obtain a P1 Visa. She is anticipated to make her debut during the 2025 preseason, with San Diego Wave FC set to participate in the Coachella Valley Invitational, featuring matches on February 16 and 22.

Okwuchukwu’s achievements extend beyond the pitch as she was a finalist for the 2024 CAF Young Player of the Year award in December.
