Sporting CP take stance on Viktor Gyokeres January window sale
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Portuguese giants Sporting CP reportedly have no plans to sell highly sought after striker Viktor Gyokeres during the January transfer window, Soccernet.football understands.

Gyokeres joined the Primeira Liga side from Coventry City in the summer of 2023 for a record €20m transfer fee but has since seen his value skyrocket, now estimated at five times that amount. Since his arrival in Lisbon, the sweden international has established himself as one of Europe’s most prolific scorers.

Currently enjoying sensational form, the 26-year-old has netted an astonishing 21 goals in just 17 Primeira Liga matches this season and added nine more across other competitions, bringing his total to 30. This follows a phenomenal debut season where he notched 43 goals to help Sporting clinch the title comfortably ahead of Benfica.

Unsurprisingly, the Swedish forward has attracted interest from top clubs including Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona, and Real Madrid. United’s interest is particularly notable as they are managed by former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim. However, a January transfer appears unlikely.

Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that despite Bayern Munich also showing interest, the Portuguese champions are determined to retain their talisman for the remainder of the season. However, while Sporting’s firm stance may deter immediate moves, a summer transfer seems more feasible.

With huge European sides such as Man United, Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea likely to be in the market for a starting striker next summer, the reigning Portuguese champions could face an impossible task if they will be looking to hold on to the Swedish goal-machine.
