The Netherlands squad comprises four goalkeepers, ten defenders, ten midfielders, and six attackers.
Many regular faces make the squad including Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, Manchester City’s Nathan Ake, Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt, and RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simmons.
Also on the list is Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga winner Jeremie Frimpong, Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn, and Atletico Madrid’s Memphis Depay.
However, Bologna striker Zirkzee surprisingly misses out. The 24-year-old is enjoying a spectacular season in Serie A, where he has notched 11 goals and four assists to help Bologna qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Bournemouth’s Justin Kluivert and Arsenal Timber also fail to make the cut.
Timber, 22, with 15 caps for the Oranje, missed most of the season due to a knee injury sustained on the Premier League’s opening weekend. He aims to return to the Arsenal bench for the final game against Everton on Sunday.
The Netherlands have until June 7 to finalize their squad for the tournament in Germany but have decided against risking Timber.
Jurrien Timber’s brother, Quinten, who plays for Feyenoord is, however, in the squad.
Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen, on loan at Borussia Dortmund, has been included instead. Maatsen, who has yet to debut, hopes to play in the friendly against Canada before the final squad selection. The Netherlands will also face Iceland before their Euro opener against Poland on June 16.
