AS Roma’s new defensive signing, Mats Hummels, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Manchester City star Rodri’s recent Ballon d’Or win, voicing his thoughts on Real Madrid’s controversial reaction, Soccernet.football reports.
The award, which went to Rodri after a stellar season, including a Champions League victory with Manchester City, was met with disappointment from Real Madrid, whose stars Vinicius Jr., Dani Carvajal, and Jude Bellingham finished behind him in the rankings.
While some expected Vinicius Jr., in particular, to be crowned Best Player in the World, Real Madrid’s decision to boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony sparked widespread discussion.
The club’s disappointment reportedly stemmed from their belief that Vinicius was a deserving winner, an opinion echoed by fans who argue that his contributions throughout the season warranted the award.

Hummels addressed the situation directly on his podcast, sharing his perspective on the reactions from Real Madrid’s camp.
He expressed concern over the language used by those who felt Vinicius had been “disrespected” by the award decision, likening it to a style of rhetoric often seen in populist politics.
“It’s unfortunate and disrespectful to other players,” Hummels stated. “There’s no doubt that someone from Real Madrid deserves it. But there are other extraordinary players who are just as good. It’s a shame not to honour them.”
The experienced former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich defender also noted that other clubs and players have faced similar disappointments in the international arena but have shown restraint in their reactions.
Hummels closed his remarks with a wry comment on the highly competitive nature of the award, saying, “The last place in the Ballon d’Or is the best last place in the world.”
Though Vinicius missed out on the title, Real Madrid was recognised with the Best Club award, and Carlo Ancelotti took home Coach of the Year honours.
