Cyriel Dessers has sent a timely reminder to Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle with a brilliant brace in Panathinaikos’ emphatic 5-1 victory over Kairat Almaty in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday, Footynaija reports.
The Nigerian striker scored once in each half to help the Greek side secure a convincing win. His latest brace also strengthens his case for a return to the national team ahead of Nigeria’s November fixtures.
Dessers doubled Panathinaikos’ lead from the penalty spot in the first half after Georgios Kyriakopoulos had opened the scoring for the hosts.
The former Rangers forward showed composure from 12 yards, sending his effort into the bottom-left corner and leaving Kairat goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov with little chance of making a save.
The 31-year-old completed his brace early in the second half with an excellent finish following a well-worked team move.
Receiving a pass from Andreas Tetteh, Dessers unleashed a powerful shot into the top-left corner.
The Nigerian international was substituted shortly before the hour mark, making way for Elmin Rastoder after delivering another impressive performance.
Dessers has now scored three goals in two Conference League appearances against Borac and Kairat Almaty. His contribution across competitions has also been encouraging, with the striker recording eight goals in 13 appearances for Panathinaikos this season.
His latest performance could boosts his argument for a Super Eagles recall as Chelle considers his options for November.
Nigeria are scheduled to face Tanzania twice that month, giving Dessers an opportunity to return to the international fold if his impressive club form continues.
