Samuel Adeniran impressed with an assist, while Super Eagles winger Moses Usor returned from injury as LASK claimed a historic 3-2 victory over Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, Footynaija reports.
The Austrian side came from behind to secure their first-ever league phase victory in the competition, producing a memorable performance at the José Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon.
The result also offered a significant moment for two Nigeriann attackers, with Adeniran making a decisive contribution and Usor returning to action after a shoulder injury.
Sporting took the lead in the fifth minute through Luis Suárez, who converted a penalty after Nestory Irankunda was brought down inside the box.
LASK responded ten minutes later when Christoph Lang controlled Kasper Jørgensen’s pass before firing into the far corner to make it 1-1.
The visitors moved ahead in the 63rd minute as Saša Kalajdžić finished a swift counter-attack, setting the stage for a decisive spell from LASK’s substitutes.
Adeniran replaced Lang in the 64th minute and needed only four minutes to make his presence felt. The powerful forward provided the assist for Kryštof Daněk, who finished to extend LASK’s advantage to 3-1.
Born in Houston, Texas, Adeniran holds Nigerian and American citizenship but has yet to earn a senior international cap for either country.
His latest contribution could strengthen his case for consideration by Nigeria coach Éric Chelle, particularly as the Super Eagles continue to assess their options in attack.
Usor also featured after overcoming concerns about his shoulder injury. The winger entered the game in the 82nd minute, replacing Kalajdžić, and helped LASK manage the closing stages with his pace and defensive work.
The 24-year-old recently made his Super Eagles debut against Madagascar in September, scoring a superb solo goal in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory in an AFCON qualifier.
Sporting threatened a late comeback when Suárez scored his second goal in the 89th minute. However, LASK survived seven minutes of stoppage time to secure all three points.
