Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has expressed his delight after scoring in Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Manchester United, Footynaija.com reports.
The Nigerian attacker started Tuesday’s encounter on the bench at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano but made an immediate impact after replacing Alex Baena in the 71st minute.
Just three minutes later, Lookman drew a red card from Manchester United defender Leny Yoro, who brought him down while attempting to stop the forward from reaching a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The 28-year-old then found the net five minutes after his introduction, reacting quickest to the rebound after Senne Lammens saved Jonathan David’s effort to put Atletico firmly in control.
Speaking after the game, Lookman revealed that manager Diego Simeone had asked him to bring energy to both ends of the pitch when he came on.
“Simeone told me to just bring the energy, try and help the team defensively and offensively,” the Super Eagles star said.
Lookman’s goal was particularly significant having gone eight consecutive games without scoring for club and country. Though pleased to contribute to the victory, the Nigerian was quick to acknowledge the work his teammates had already put in before his introduction.

“I’m very happy to come on and help the team; it’s important.
“The guys put in a big shift before I came on, which made it easier to slot in and play, so I’m really pleased with the collective effort.
“This win gives us huge confidence heading into our next fixture against Espanyol.”

Lookman’s decisive contribution comes after Simeone publicly backed him to rediscover his best form, insisting before the Manchester United clash that the Nigerian needed to keep taking on defenders and remain willing to risk losing possession.
With that message now followed by a goal and an influential substitute appearance, Lookman will hope to carry the momentum into Saturday’s La Liga meeting with Espanyol and strengthen his case for a starting place.
