Former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31, Soccernet.football reports.

The French World Cup winner made the decision after a severe knee injury cut short his time at Italian club Como, where he had only recently made his debut.

In an emotional message shared on social media, Varane opened up about the reasons behind his decision, reflecting on a career filled with extraordinary achievements and memorable moments.

“They say all good things must come to an end,” Varane wrote. “In my career, I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments, and memories that will last a lifetime.”

Varane expressed his desire to leave the game on a high note rather than continue struggling through injuries. “I wanted to go out strong, not just holding on to the game,” he said, recognising the difficult choice to step away.

The Frenchman leaves behind a decorated legacy, having won four Champions League titles with Real Madrid and playing a vital role in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph.

His journey also included a two-year stint at Manchester United, where he continued to display the leadership and defensive nous that defined his career.

“I have loved fighting for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates, and the supporters of every team I have played for,” Varane stated.

“From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and playing for our national team. I have defended every badge with everything I have, and loved every minute of the journey.”

Though retiring from the pitch, Varane hinted at a future with Como, indicating that he would remain involved with the club in a non-playing role. “I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads,” he explained.

In closing, Varane thanked all who supported him throughout his career, saying, “Thank you to everyone who made this journey more special than my wildest dreams could ever foresee.”
