Nigeria have the three points they wanted from their opening Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, but Mutiu Adepoju has warned the Super Eagles against treating Friday’s comeback win over Madagascar as anything more than a first step in the race for a place at the 2027 tournament, Footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles had to work for their opening victory in Uyo after Madagascar took a surprise lead in the 16th minute. George Ilenikhena restored parity on his international debut before Moses Usor completed the comeback in the second half, giving Eric Chelle’s side a winning start.
The result becomes even more important when the qualification format is considered. Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at the finals as one of the three co-hosts, leaving Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau effectively fighting for the remaining qualifying spot in Group L.

Nigeria will now travel to Guinea-Bissau on September 29, where another difficult fixture awaits Chelle’s team. A second win would give the Super Eagles a strong early position, but the campaign is still only one match old.
Adepoju sends warning after Super Eagles victory
Adepoju welcomed the result but believes the players and their coach must keep their attention on the longer road ahead.
The former Nigeria international told Sports247 that the victory was a positive way to begin the qualifiers, particularly after the team conceded first, while also pointing to the depth now available to Chelle.
“It’s a good way to start the qualifier with a victory, not minding that we conceded first. The most important thing is that the team won against Madagascar. I am delighted that we have so many options that can play for the Super Eagles.”
Adepoju’s main warning, however, was about what comes after the opening victory. The Super Eagles still have several qualifying matches to play before their AFCON place is secured, and there will be other international assignments beyond the continental competition.
