Sevilla have suffered a major setback in their attempt to sign Nigeria’s most expensive teenager, George Ilenikhena, after Al Ittihad changed its demands at the last minute, Footynaija reports.
The Spanish club had been close to completing a loan deal for the 19-year-old striker, with an agreement reportedly reached between the player and Sevilla. Ilenikhena was keen on returning to Europe after struggling to establish himself in Saudi Arabia.
However, Al Ittihad’s financial situation has changed the transfer plans, according to reports in Spain. Instead of allowing Ilenikhena to leave on loan, the Saudi club now wants a permanent transfer and has set a €25 million asking price.
That demand has put Sevilla in a difficult position. The Spanish club did not expect to pay such a large fee and has now been forced to rethink its plans for the rest of the transfer window.
Ilenikhena’s European ambitions have not changed. The Nigerian striker had previously attracted attention after his impressive spell at AS Monaco, before Al Ittihad paid €33 million to sign him in February.
The youngster is now facing an uncertain future. Sevilla had hoped to add him to an attack that already includes Isaac Romero and new signing Robbie Ure, but Al Ittihad’s decision has put the move in serious danger.
The latest development is frustrating for Ilenikhena because a return to European football appeared to be within reach. Sevilla must now decide whether to meet Al Ittihad’s €25 million demand or look elsewhere for another striker before the transfer window closes.
