Ahmed Abdullahi’s time at Sunderland could be drawing to a close after Turkish Super Lig side Eyüpspor opened talks over a move for the Nigerian striker this summer, Footynaija.com reports.
The 22-year-old arrived at the Stadium of Light from Belgian club Gent in 2024 with plenty of promise, but injuries have prevented him from making the impact many expected. Two years on, he is yet to make a competitive senior appearance for the Black Cats, and a move away now appears to be a realistic option.
There was another sign of his current position at the club over the weekend. While Sunderland’s first team beat York City 5-1 in a pre-season friendly, Abdullahi featured for the club’s Under-21 side against South Shields instead. With Brian Brobbey and Wilson Isidor leading the attack, and youngster Trey Ogunsuyi also involved in pre-season, breaking into Régis Le Bris’ plans has become increasingly difficult.

For the former Flying Eagles forward, a fresh start may be exactly what his career needs. Regular football has been hard to find since his move to England, largely because of fitness setbacks, and a switch to Turkey could give him the chance to rediscover the form that once made him one of Nigeria’s brightest young prospects.
Abdullahi represented Nigeria at the 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and had previously attracted interest from clubs such as Marseille and Borussia Dortmund before joining Gent. Those early signs of promise remain part of his story, but consistent minutes will now be important if he is to fulfil that potential.
Nothing has been finalised, but the talks suggest Sunderland are willing to listen to offers. If a deal can be agreed, both club and player could benefit from a move that offers Abdullahi the opportunity to put an injury-hit spell behind him and begin the next chapter of his career.
