Former Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu has explained the reasons behind his decision to commit his future to Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv, bringing an end to weeks of speculation linking him with a move away from the club, Footynaija.com reports.
Kalu recently put pen to paper on a new contract that will keep him at Botev until 2029, despite attracting interest from several clubs during the summer transfer window.
Speaking after signing the extension, the 28-year-old admitted there was a genuine possibility of leaving the club but revealed that talks with Botev’s president ultimately convinced him that staying put was the right decision.

“Yes, there was interest from a few clubs, so there was a possibility that I could have left the club this summer,” Kalu told Footy-Africa.
“However, after discussions with the club president, I decided to sign a contract extension so I can focus on the most important thing, which is playing football.”
The former Bordeaux and Watford winger had been linked with a move to Bulgarian rivals Levski Sofia, while clubs in Switzerland, where he previously featured for Lausanne-Sport, were also reported to be monitoring his situation before he opted to extend his stay.
Kalu reserved special praise for the Botev president, crediting the club chief’s support as a decisive factor in his decision to continue his career in Plovdiv.

“To be honest, the club president has been very good to me. I cannot deny that, and he played a major role in my decision to sign a new contract.
“That issue is over now. I am ready to give my best and help the team achieve success alongside my teammates. I am looking forward to great things with Botev this season.”
Kalu enjoyed an encouraging campaign last season, registering three goals and three assists in 26 appearances across all competitions. With his future now settled, the former Nigeria international will be hoping to build on that form as Botev target a stronger showing in the Bulgarian top flight.
