Victor Boniface has returned early to Bayer Leverkusen’s training base as the Super Eagles striker battles to revive his career ahead of the new Bundesliga season, Footynaija reports.
The 25-year-old has spent the last two weeks working at the club’s facilities despite official pre-season training starting on July 13. Boniface is recovering from right knee surgery carried out in January after an injury-hit campaign.
According to BILD, the striker trains daily with Bayer Leverkusen’s medical staff, combining rehabilitation, strength work, running drills and ball sessions.
“The knee problems are no longer on my mind when I’m on the pitch,” Boniface said. “That’s a very good feeling.”
He added: “I’m working on getting back into very good form step by step.”
Boniface is also expected to hold a personal training camp in Marbella before the season begins.
His future at Leverkusen remains uncertain as sporting director Simon Rolfes and new manager Erik ten Hag assess the squad.
One option is for him to remain and compete with Patrik Schick for a starting role after proving his fitness during pre-season. Another possibility is a fresh loan move that would allow him to play regularly while continuing his recovery, although clubs remain cautious because of his injury history.
A permanent transfer is also possible if Bayer Leverkusen receive an offer in the region of €40 million to €50 million. Previous interest from Al Nassr and Newcastle United failed to produce a deal because of financial discussions and medical concerns.
Boniface’s performances over the coming weeks could determine which path he takes before the transfer window closes.
