The Super Eagles of Nigeria will take on Poland in an international friendly at the PGE Narodowy in Warsaw on Wednesday night as Eric Chelle’s men seek to continue their recent strong run of form, Footynaija.com reports.

Both nations head into the encounter looking to put recent World Cup qualification disappointment behind them after narrowly missing out on a place at this summer’s tournament.

Nigeria arrive in Poland on the back of a successful Unity Cup campaign in London, where they lifted the trophy after defeating Jamaica in the final, while the White-Reds will be hoping to bounce back from successive defeats against Sweden and Ukraine.

With both teams eager to build momentum and assess their options ahead of upcoming international fixtures, Wednesday’s contest promises to be an intriguing test between two talented sides.

Recent form

Nigeria have enjoyed a positive run of results in recent months despite the heartbreak of failing to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles responded well to their World Cup playoff disappointment by finishing strongly at the Africa Cup of Nations before extending their unbeaten run with impressive performances at the Unity Cup.

Chelle’s side looked particularly dangerous going forward during the tournament, scoring freely and displaying the attacking fluidity that has become a feature of the Franco-Malian’s tenure.

Poland, meanwhile, have endured a more difficult spell. The White-Reds saw their World Cup hopes ended by Sweden in dramatic fashion before suffering a 2-0 home defeat to Ukraine in their most recent outing.

Defensive vulnerabilities have been a concern for Jan Urban’s side in recent matches, with Poland conceding multiple goals in several of their recent fixtures.

History and head-to-head

Wednesday’s encounter will mark only the second meeting between both nations at senior international level.

Their only previous clash came in March 2018 when Nigeria claimed a memorable 1-0 victory in Wroclaw courtesy of a second-half penalty from Victor Moses.

The Super Eagles will therefore be aiming to maintain their perfect record against the Europeans, while Poland will be determined to gain revenge on home soil.

Team news

Poland could make a number of changes from the side that lost to Ukraine, with Karol Swiderski and Jakub Kaminski among the players pushing for starting places.

Veteran striker Robert Lewandowski remains the focal point of the White-Reds attack and is expected to lead the line once again as he continues to add to his remarkable international goal tally.

Nigeria will be without several key names for the fixture.

Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are unavailable, while Unity Cup-winning duo Alhassan Yusuf and Samson Tijani will miss out due to visa-related issues.

However, Chelle still has plenty of experience at his disposal, with captain Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi all included in the squad. The Fulham midfielder could also make his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles if selected.

Tactical preview

Nigeria are expected to retain the proactive approach that served them well during the Unity Cup, with Chelle likely to encourage his side to press aggressively and attack with purpose whenever opportunities arise.

The midfield battle could prove decisive, particularly with Ndidi and Frank Onyeka expected to provide the platform for the Super Eagles to control possession and launch attacks.

Poland, however, possess plenty of quality in advanced areas and will look to utilise the creativity of Piotr Zielinski alongside the finishing ability of Lewandowski.

With both teams boasting attacking threats and neither side known for sitting deep, an open and entertaining contest could be on the cards in Warsaw.

What to expect

This fixture presents a valuable opportunity for both managers to test their squads against quality opposition.

Nigeria appear to have the stronger momentum heading into the game after their recent success in London, but Poland’s home advantage could prove significant.

The Super Eagles have shown they possess enough firepower to trouble most opponents, while Poland remain capable of punishing defensive mistakes through the experience of Lewandowski.

Supporters should anticipate a highly competitive encounter between two sides eager to restore confidence and continue building towards future international commitments.
