Nigeria celebrated a fourth Unity Cup title on Saturday evening, beating Jamaica 3-0 at The Valley in Charlton, London, to successfully defend their crown in a performance that left very little to argue about, Footynaija.com reports.

Alhassan Yusuf scored twice and captain Terem Moffi added a header as the Super Eagles ran out convincing winners, completing a flawless tournament campaign that also included a 2-0 semi-final win over Zimbabwe.

It was Nigeria’s most commanding display under Eric Chelle and served as a timely reminder of what this squad is capable of producing when things click.

Former Super Eagles coach Jo Bonfrere watched it all and was not surprised. The Dutch-born tactician, who guided Nigeria to Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996, told CompleteSports that he always expected Nigeria to win, even if the occasion carried a bitter edge for him personally.

Bonfrere’s verdict

“It’s good that the Super Eagles won the cup. They were always going to win because I know the Super Eagles are a big team in Africa and the world, with great players playing for big clubs around the world,” Bonfrere said.

He also acknowledged what it means to be watching a World Cup from his living room without Nigeria in it.

“I don’t know if I will be at the World Cup. It doesn’t look likely that I’ll be there. I will most likely watch it on television. But it’s sad that Nigeria’s Super Eagles will not be there,” he said, lamenting a qualifying campaign that ended in controversy, a penalty defeat to DR Congo in Rabat and a FIFA eligibility petition that ultimately went nowhere.

“The world will miss the presence and display of Super Eagles players who are playing for various clubs in Europe and across the world,” Bonfrere added.

Nigeria are now the most successful nation in Unity Cup history, having won all four editions of the tournament since its inception in 2002. The attention turns now to the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, with Chelle expected to use the tournament’s momentum as the foundation for whatever comes next.
