Nigeria’s Falconets have been handed a demanding path at the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after being drawn against Spain, China and tournament newcomers New Caledonia in Group F, Footynaija reports.

The draw ceremony took place on Friday in the Polish city of Łódź, one of the four venues selected to host the competition later this year. The tournament will run from 5 September to 27 September across Łódź, Katowice, Sosnowiec and Bielsko-Biała.

The Falconets secured their place at the finals after edging Malawi 3-2 on aggregate during the African qualifiers. Moses Aduku’s side won the first leg 2-0 in Ikenne before surviving a tense return match in Lilongwe, where they lost 2-1 but still advanced.

Nigeria now face one of the most competitive groups in the tournament. Spain are widely regarded as one of the strongest teams in women’s youth football after years of success at international level. Their possession-heavy style and strong academy system have helped them dominate several age-grade competitions in recent years.

China also arrive with vast experience and a reputation for tactical discipline, while New Caledonia will be making their debut appearance on the global stage.

The draw also revives familiar battles for the Falconets. Nigeria defeated Spain 2-1 during the group stage of the 2016 tournament in Papua New Guinea, although the African side still failed to reach the knockout phase on goal difference. Spain later gained revenge at France 2018 when future stars Aitana Bonmatí and Patricia Guijarro inspired a 2-1 quarter-final victory.

Nigeria’s meetings with China have also produced memorable moments. China beat the Falconets 3-0 at the 2006 edition in Russia, but the Nigerians responded with a dramatic performance in 2018. Rasheedat Ajibade scored a stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw that helped Nigeria progress to the quarter-finals ahead of the Chinese side.

The Falconets remain one of Africa’s most successful teams in the history of the competition, having reached the final twice, in 2010 and 2014. With the group-stage draw now confirmed, attention will turn to preparations as Nigeria seek another strong run in Poland.
