Nigeria’s Falconets secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in dramatic fashion after surviving a fierce comeback from Malawi to progress 3-2 on aggregate in Lilongwe on Saturday, Footynaija reports.

The seven-time African champions arrived at the Bingu National Stadium holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Ikenne, but they were pushed to the limit by an energetic Malawi side determined to reach the tournament for the first time.

Malawi made the perfect start when Faith Chimzimu broke the deadlock after only nine minutes, sending the home supporters into celebration and immediately putting Nigeria under pressure. The hosts continued to attack with pace and confidence, while the Falconets struggled to settle into the contest.

The pressure increased early in the second half when Chimzimu struck again to complete her brace and level the tie at 2-2 on aggregate.

For a brief moment, Nigeria’s long-standing record of qualifying for every edition of the competition looked to be in danger.

However, the Falconets responded when it mattered most. In the 62nd minute, Oscar Precious delivered the decisive moment of the match, scoring the goal that restored Nigeria’s aggregate lead and silenced the crowd in Lilongwe.

Malawi continued to push forward in search of another goal that would have forced extra time, but the Falconets defended strongly in the closing stages to protect their advantage and confirm their place at Poland 2026.

It will be Nigeria’s 12th appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, maintaining their remarkable record as ever-present participants in the competition.

The Falconets, who finished runners-up in 2010 and 2014, will now hope to go one step further and finally lift the trophy when the tournament takes place in Poland from 5 to 27 September 2026.

Ghana also confirmed qualification on Saturday after defeating Uganda 3-2 on aggregate to secure another African ticket to the global tournament.
