Victor Boniface: Werder Bremen coach reveals return timeline for Super Eagles star
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Victor Boniface is closing in on his return to competitive football, with Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune confirming the Super Eagles striker could feature as early as this weekend’s Bundesliga clash against Stuttgart at the MHP Arena, Footynaija.com reports.

Boniface has been absent from competitive action since December 2025, when a persistent knee cartilage problem eventually led to surgery and a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

His road back has not been without further interruption, an illness last week ruled him out of a planned appearance for Werder’s U23 side in a local derby against Bremer SV, setting his reintegration back slightly.

However, Thioune has given an encouraging update ahead of the Stuttgart fixture, per Deichstube, indicating the 25-year-old has cleared that hurdle.

“I had a good impression of him on the training pitch on Thursday, at least in the sense that he’s overcome the flu,” the Bremen coach said.

“I don’t want to rule it out, but of course I’m looking at the training sessions and what the team needs, but also what Victor needs. I’ve already indicated that he could play a role again, but definitely not as a starter rather, in a game situation where he might get some minutes.”

Werder Bremen currently sit 15th in the Bundesliga table, with only a slender cushion above the relegation zone and a handful of matches left to secure their top-flight status.

Boniface made 11 appearances for Bremen before his injury registering two assists, and Thioune’s cautious optimism suggests the club view him as a potentially decisive option off the bench as the season reaches its crunch point.

A late fitness assessment will determine whether he travels to Stuttgart.
