Nigeria have handed a first senior call-up to Emmanuel Fernandez, with the Super Eagles moving swiftly to secure the services of the in-form defender following an impressive spell in Scotland, Footynaija reports.
The 24-year-old Rangers defender has been informed he will be part of the squad for this month’s international fixtures, as per Ibrox News.
His inclusion marks a significant step in a career that has developed rapidly over the past year, transforming him from a relatively low-profile player into a strong contender for a place in Nigeria’s defence.
Since joining Rangers from Peterborough United, Fernandez has quickly established himself as a key figure. He has made 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals, a notable return for a central defender, while also contributing to 10 clean sheets. His performances reached a high point in January, when he was named the club’s Player of the Month after a series of commanding displays.
Fernandez’s strengths lie in his physical presence, aerial dominance, and composure on the ball. He is particularly effective during set-pieces at both ends of the pitch, regularly posing a goal threat while also helping his team defend crosses. His ability to play out from the back aligns well with the tactical approach of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who is keen to build a more balanced and modern defensive unit.
Nigeria already possess experienced centre-backs such as Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, but Fernandez’s arrival offers added depth and a different profile. His right-footed style and strength in the air could complement Bassey’s ball-carrying ability, providing greater balance at the heart of the defence.
The call-up also reflects a longer-term vision, with Chelle looking to refresh his squad and introduce younger options capable of growing into key roles. Fernandez’s development in European competitions, including the UEFA Europa League, suggests he is ready for the step up to international football.
Nigeria are set to compete in a four-team friendly tournament later this month, where Fernandez could make his debut.
