Frank Onyeka marked the start of his Coventry City career with a lively and disciplined performance as the Sky Blues claimed a 3-1 home victory over Middlesbrough to climb back to the top of the Championship, footynaija.com reports.
The Nigeria international, who recently joined Coventry City on loan from Brentford, was thrown straight into the starting line-up by Frank Lampard. His debut had been delayed by the birth of his son, but there was no hesitation in handing him a key midfield role once he was available.

Onyeka’s display was built on energy, smart positioning and strong defensive work. He regularly broke up play, recovered loose balls and battled well in midfield duels, helping Coventry regain control whenever Middlesbrough tried to push forward. When he was withdrawn midway through the second half, the home crowd rose to applaud, a warm welcome for a player already making an impact.
While Onyeka steadied things in the middle of the pitch, the night belonged to Haji Wright in front of goal.
Don’t think you’ll see a more impactful performance this season than that from Frank Onyeka 👏

The American forward struck three times in a clinical display. He opened the scoring in the first half after a clever cut-back from Jack Rudoni, before doubling the lead early after the break with a composed finish following a long kick forward.
Middlesbrough briefly threatened a comeback when Riley McGree fired home from close range, but Coventry remained calm. A late handball in the box handed Wright the chance to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot, which he converted with ease.
By full-time, Coventry had secured another crucial win, powered by Wright’s goals and strengthened by a debut that suggested Onyeka could quickly become a key figure in Lampard’s promotion push.
