AFCON 2025 Last 16: What Mozambique must do to shock Nigeria

Mozambique go into their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash against Nigeria with history already made, but to go one step further and eliminate the three-time African champions would require the performance of their footballing lives, Footynaija.com reports.

Against a Super Eagles side stacked with pedigree, depth and attacking firepower, the Mambas will be aware that a merely cautious approach cannot do the job on Monday night. If an upset is to materialise, Mozambique must embrace risk and self-belief.

Prevent Nigeria from having total control

The Super Eagles thrive in games where they are able to exercise control by dominating possession, putting their opponents under sustained pressure and attacking with fluidity. Mozambique’s best chance lies in disrupting that rhythm.

Rather than sitting excessively deep for long spells, the Mambas must pick moments to press aggressively and force errors high up the pitch. A chaotic tempo, broken sequences of play and frequent stoppages would suit the underdogs far more than a controlled, one-way contest.

Nigeria’s occasional lapses in concentration during transitions have been evident at this tournament and Mozambique must look to exploit those moments ruthlessly.

Exploit wide spaces and transitions

Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo is Mozambique’s biggest weapon, and his role could define the contest. Nigeria’s full-backs often push high, leaving space in behind — space Mozambique must attack with conviction.

Quick vertical passes, early balls into wide areas and immediate forward movement will be essential. The Mambas cannot afford slow build-up play that allows the Super Eagles to reset their defensive shape and every transition must be treated as a genuine scoring opportunity.

Even if Mozambique see little of the ball, they must ensure that when they do, it counts.

Be perfect without the ball

Defensively, Mozambique will have to operate near flawlessly. Compact spacing between the lines, constant communication and aggressive box defending will be non-negotiable against Nigeria’s fluid front line.

The likes of Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman will punish hesitation, so Mozambique’s center backs must decide early whether to step out or drop and commit fully. The slightest hint of indecision could prove fatal.

Set pieces will also be a major test. Mozambique must defend dead-ball situations with discipline, while seeing attacking set plays as valuable opportunities to tilt momentum.

Take risks at the right time

An upset will not come from surviving for 90 minutes alone. Mozambique must be brave enough to commit numbers forward at selected moments, particularly if the game remains level deep into the contest.

Substitutions could play a key role with the introduction of fresh legs late on to unsettle a Nigeria side expected to control proceedings. This is where Mozambique must gamble as there is little value in exiting the tournament quietly.

Why an upset would be historic

Mozambique have never reached the AFCON quarter-finals, and eliminating a three-time champion would represent one of the great shocks in the competition’s recent history. 

Having already qualified from a difficult group as one of the best third-placed teams, the Mambas are operating beyond expectations and that freedom could be their greatest strength.

The Super Eagles remain overwhelming favourites, but if Mozambique can step up on Monday night and shock their West African counterparts, they’ll be delivering one of this year’s tournament’s most unforgettable moments.
