The opening round of Group C matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations delivered a mix of control, resilience and individual brilliance, with several players setting the early standard for performances in the group, Footynaija.com reports.

From Nigeria’s attacking dominance to Tunisia’s clinical edge and Tanzania’s resilience, Matchday One produced a Best XI that reflects both winning influence and standout individual displays, even in defeat.

Goalkeeper

Zuberi Foba (Tanzania) – Even in defeat, Foba was the standout performer between the posts. The 23-year-old kept Tanzania in the contest against Nigeria with eight crucial saves, denying Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. His reflexes and command of the box made him the most influential goalkeeper of the opening round.

Defenders

Ali Abdi (Tunisia, LB) – The left-back combined defensive discipline with attacking intent, delivering an assist in Tunisia’s 3-1 win over Uganda. His ability to overlap, pick out teammates in dangerous areas, and maintain defensive solidity made him a key component in Tunisia’s comfortable display.

Semi Ajayi (Nigeria, CB) – The Super Eagles’ central defender made his mark in front of goal as well as at the back, rising to head Nigeria into the lead against Tanzania. Ajayi’s presence in the box and his aerial dominance is exactly why he is central to Nigeria’s defensive plans.

Calvin Bassey (Nigeria, CB) – Alongside Ajayi, Bassey put in a commanding performance at the heart of the Super Eagles’ defence. Strong in duels and composed on the ball, he helped nullify Tanzanian threats and provided a stable platform for Nigeria’s attacking forays.

Bright Osayi-Samuel (Nigeria, RB) – The right-back combined efficiency on both sides of the pitch. Consistently supporting Nigeria’s attacks while remaining defensively alert, Osayi-Samuel ensured balance down the right flank and contributed to a solid defensive line.

Midfielders

Novatus Miroshi (Tanzania, MF) – Miroshi was one of the few bright sparks for Tanzania, creating an early second half assist that allowed Charles M’Mombwa to level the scores against Nigeria. His composure on the ball and ability to pick passes in tight areas kept Tanzania competitive.

Ellyes Skhiri (Tunisia, MF) – Skhiri’s influence was immediately felt as he scored against Uganda, adding a crucial spark to Tunisia’s midfield. The 30-year-old controlled transitions, pressed intelligently, and combined effectively with Mejbri to dictate the tempo.

Hannibal Mejbri (Tunisia, MF) – Mejbri produced an impressive display, assisting Tunisia’s opening goal and driving the team forward with energy and vision. His creativity and ability to link defence and attack made him an indispensable figure in the Carthage Eagles’ midfield.

Alex Iwobi (Nigeria, MF) – The Super Eagles’ creative fulcrum against Tanzania, Iwobi contributed two assists, threading passes and exploiting spaces in the Tanzanian defence. His experience and decision-making in the final third were decisive for Nigeria’s attacking rhythm.

Forwards

Ademola Lookman (Nigeria, FW) – Lookman’s composure in front of goal earned him a spot in the Best XI. His strike against Tanzania restored Nigeria’s lead and showcased his ability to make an impact in tight moments.

Elias Achouri (Tunisia, FW) – Achouri was clinical against Uganda, scoring two goals either side of the half time whistle to ensure Tunisia’s 3-1 win. His movement, finishing and timing of runs kept the Ugandan defence unsettled, marking him as one of the standout forwards in Group C.
